Friday Breeders Cup Analysis

Royal Delta Looks for Back to Back Ladies Classic Victories

Race 1: Allowance

Top 3 Selections: #11 Quail Hill, #10 Dreamcatcher, #9 Swift Eagle

Analysis: I won’t  run down the full field for the non-breeders cup races, but I will provide my thoughts on my top three in the race.  QUAIL HILL has two solid second place efforts against similar company, and looks like the controlling speed in the race.  DREAMCATCHER has done his best running lately, and has the help of solid jockey Joel Rosario.  SWIFT EAGLE comes into this one as the hot horse, winning his last two races. Top 5 Breeders Cup Races

1. Turf Mile

I’ve already published an article on this race, so most of you know my strong excitement for this one.  Wise Dan vs. Excelebration is what the Breeders Cup is all about.  The United States vs. Europe.  Legacies on the line!  Oh yeah, and then there are some other horses in this race that are pretty good, including former Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.  Also, as with all turf races at the Breeders Cup, the international flavor makes for fun match ups. Santa Anita Trainer and Jockey Standings

With the Breeders Cup coming up this week, I thought it would be beneficial to post the standings for trainers and jockeys at the current meet.  Often times the local colony will do well on their home track for obvious reasons.  Here is a look at the current standings:

Wise Dan vs. Excelebration

Excelebration

For months now, American horse racing fans have wondered what it would be like if Frankel came to the United States for the Breeders Cup.  Obviously that isn’t going to happen, but the presence of Excelebration might be the next best thing.  This strapping four-year old bay colt has won 8 for 14 lifetime starts, and has amassed over $2.5 million dollars in earnings.  His biggest claim to fame, however, may be his runner-up finishes to the Frankel.  The mighty Frankel has beaten Excelebration by an average of just over five lengths in four starts against each other, showing that Excelebration has proven to be no match for the great beast.  If not for Frankel, Excelebration could be rolling into Santa Anita on an EIGHT race win streak.

Speaking of winning streaks, from the Red White, and Blue corner comes a horse that’s won three races in a row coming into this colossal showdown.  Wise Dan could possibly be America’s best turf miler in years, as his last three races have all been at that distance over the turf.  Like Excelebration, his earnings exceed $2 million dollars, and he’s won 12 of 19 lifetime races.  All three of his latest victories have been in blowout fashion, and all three have come against graded stakes company.  In mid-June Wise Dan was rated as the number one older male in the country by many, but suffered a nose loss in the Stephen Foster at Churchill on the dirt.  The loss sparked the move back to turf, and they haven’t looked back since.  While Excelebration brings a lot of unknown factors to American handicapers, there aren’t many unknown’s to us when it comes to Wise Dan.  Simply put: He’s really good. Breeders Cup Predictions #7

This will be our last set of predictions before our official Breeders Cup Preview next week.  I’ve made two changes this week.

Classic: Game On Dude – It’s been a broken record over the last seven weeks.  Game On Dude is the pick in this one, and he might be the best bet of the whole Breeders Cup

Ladies Classic: Questing – I’ve flipped flopped more than a politician in this race, but I’m back on Questing once again.  Her running style suits Santa Anita, and I think she’ll rebound off a dull effort last time out.

Mile: Wise Dan – It’s going to be the Mile for Wise Dan, and I’m happy about this choice.  Tough Euro’s could be coming in to challenge though.

Turf: Optimizer – Sticking by my boy once again. Continue reading

Breeders Cup Live Longshots

Ron the Greek could Take Home the Biggest Prize

We’ve given you weekly picks for all the Breeders Cup races over the last few weeks, and tomorrow we’ll post our last set of predictions until our massive preview is posted on Breeders Cup week.  However, today we’ll focus on a few horses that might light up the tote board on horse racing’s biggest day.

Ron the Greek – I’m thinking out of the three Bill Mott horses pointing towards the Classic this is the one that has a shot to take down Game On Dude.  He’s been very consistent all year, and already has a big win over the Santa Anita surface which is more important than you might think.

Optimizer – He’s been my pick to win the race for a few weeks, and he also qualifies under the “light up the tote board” category.  He’s found his spot on the lawn, and it looks like he can run all day on it. Continue reading
