Racing Dudes Simple Form: The Strub Stakes (Grade 2)

We’ve created something new for you to take a look at today.  It’s called the “Simple Form.”  Our goal with this is to give you an informative product that will assist in your handicapping, as well as making it the easiest form in horse racing to read.  The horses are ranked by jockey, trainer, pace and the “Racing Dudes” numbers.  The trainer, jockey and pace scenario’s are based on a 1-10 point scale, while the Racing Dudes number is based on a 1-20 scale.  The Racing Dudes number is a specially designed  number we created to evaluate horses based on their past performances.  This number carries a higher value than the other categories because it is the most important aspect in handicapping a race.

We hope you enjoy this new product and please feel free to give us feedback on what you think!

The Dudette Handicaps Gulfstream’s 1/30/13 Card

The Dudette Shares a Moment with Kale's Kourage

The Dudette Shares a Moment with Kale’s Kourage

My betting strategy is simple, and most say ineffective (especially my husband).  I rely heavily on the horses looks and karma.  I am a huge fan of seeing the horses up close and betting based on what I see.  I root for the underdog, and like to let them know I think they can do it.  I like fields of 8 or less.  It’s a given your odds of winning go up when the number in the field goes down.  I put my trust (and my money) on these philosophies.  It’s hard to do all of this by looking at a computer screen, but I’ll try my best.  I’ll leave you with this: I don’t always come out a winner, but leaving the track even is enough for me!

Race 1:  A 7 horse field is my kind of race! I like #2 Graybignbadlikedad because, well, he’s gray.  I also like his 6/1 ML odds 🙂

Race 2:  Having 11 horses in a race is ridiculous.  I’m going with #9 Harling’s Darling because I was told to pick a horse in every race.

Race 3:  I like #6 It’s Time to Reign because at 20/1 in an 8 horse race I want to see it rain some green 🙂

Race 4:  Again with 10 horses, bad idea.  I’ll go with #10 Whatsnottolike because he’s the only one from Maryland 🙂  Lovin’ me some northeast! Continue reading

Oaklawn Report #3

Apprehender Wins the King Cotton

Apprehender Wins the King Cotton

3 Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Apprehender (KY) – On Saturday when winning the King Cotton, Apprehender was able to get three monkey’s off his back all at once.  First, he got his first stakes win.  Second, he avenged an earlier loss to Laurie’s Rocket, who soared by him as the favorite at Oaklawn in an ungraded stakes last year.  Third, and perhaps most importantly, he was finally able to beat Alsvid in his third attempt to do so.  With Alsvid and Apprehender likely to be pointed towards similar races throughout the year, you can bet these two are going to square off one again.  Taking the blinkers off this horse has really helped him relax, and I look for him to continue to make a strong impact in the Oaklawn sprint division.  I would assume the Grade 3 Count Fleet is his end of the meet goal.

– 2nd Star: Alsvid (KY) – He may have lost to Apprehender this time out, but Alsvid still ran a super race.  The rail draw didn’t do him any favors, as the 4-year-old son of Officer was boxed in through much of the race.  It looked as though he wasn’t able to hit his best stride until the late stages.  That factor coupled with a lack of early pace pressure on Apprehender made if tough for Alsvid to run down the winner.  Like I mentioned early, these two will surely meet again as this is a developing rivalry that should be fun to watch.

– 3rd Star: Z Rockstar (OK) – This horse is about as honest as they come when running at Oaklawn and Remington Park.  Z Rockstar had to dig deep with everything he had to win Thursday’s featured allowance race, as he went wire to wire while just holding off Don Dulce at the end.  The win gives Z Rockstar his third straight victory, and also his second straight victory at Oaklawn Park.  Trainer Donnie K Von Hemel has plenty of options for this one’s next race, which will make it interesting to see where he pops up next.

– Honorable Mention: Awesome Mama, I Am Miss Brown, Channel Isle, Laurie’s Rocket Continue reading

Lecomte and Smarty Jones Stakes Review

Lecomte Stakes (Grade 3)

Oxbow – This was a big time performance!  You have to consider him a serious threat from here on out.  It’s still very early, but this was the most impressive race of the three-year old season by far.

Golden Soul – Really none of the others in here showed much of anything, but Golden Soul did get pretty far behind and closed well for second.  Certainly not a horrible performance for a horse making only his third start, but not Derby quality quite yet.

Fear the Kitten – He also closed pretty well to finish third, but the thoughts are the same as Golden Soul…didn’t show enough to get you excited about Derby possibilities Continue reading

Oaklawn Report #2

Will Take Charge Wins the Smarty Jones

Will Take Charge Wins the Smarty Jones

3 Stars of the Week

– 1st Star: Will Take Charge (KY) – Lets party likes it’s 1999!  It has been a long time since D Wayne Lukas has won a Triple Crown prep race, but this weekend he won two.  On Saturday Oxbow dominated the Lecomte Stakes at the Fair Grounds, and of course on Monday Will Take Charge was able to do just enough to win the Smarty Jones.  Even though he was only a neck winner, Will Take Charge was impressive considering he had a poor trip.  He was fanned six wide into the first turn, and continued to race wide throughout the race while chasing a fairly hot pace.  Down the stretch it looked as though he would not get by Texas Bling, but he showed tremendous heart and dug in to get by him in the final strides.  This colt could be one to watch, and should also improve as the distance gets longer.  He’s going to be a player in the Oaklawn three-year old series.

– 2nd Star: American Sugar (KY) – Her win in the Dixie Belle was a powerhouse performance.  The late running American Sugar was way out of it early in the race, but absolutely stormed by them all down the lane to win by a convincing seven lengths.  The filly looks to be a top-notch sprinter, but the question of whether or not she can stretch out is still a mystery.  Trainer Lynn Chleborad seemed to hint towards running her two turns next, so we’ll see if she’s up to that kind of challenge.  If not, they at least know they have a horse that loves going six furlongs and should be able to compete with most horses I’ve seen in her class.

– 3rd Star: Texas Bling (TX) – Perhaps his upset win in the Springboard Mile was NOT a fluke after all.  While coming from off the pace in that one, in the Smarty Jones he was part of a hot early pace, and still managed to come within a neck of winning.  He was actually ahead of Will Take Charge through almost all of the stretch, before finally losing the lead right before the wire.  These two might be developing a bit of a rivalry, and Texas Bling has certainly proven he belongs in races like the Southwest and the Rebel as we move down the road to the Kentucky Derby.

Biggest Flop of the Week

Brown Almighty (KY) – The locally owned horse would have been a nice story, but this was not a great performance for his first dirt try.  He looked unsettled throughout while failing to make any kind of move; finishing fifth and beaten by double digits.  Even though this race was disappointing, you shouldn’t give up on him yet.  He’s shown he can compete with some solid turf horse as that looks to be where his future lies.  I wouldn’t be shocked if they gave it one more go on the dirt, but this effort wasn’t encouraging.  According to the Brown Almighty twitter account the horse may have had a lung infection, which would explain a poor performance.
