Racing Dudes Handicapping Challenge: Halterman vs. Lukas vs. Neulist

DudesChallenge

Welcome to another week of the Racing Dudes Handicapping Challenge! Each weekend we select 8 to 10 races from around the country and offer up a little handicapping challenge to anyone interested. We’ve received a massive amount of interest to take on the Dudes! So much so that we’ve had to resort to drawing randomly to see who gets to take on our defending champ Mr. Halterman (Dude #1). Everyone will get a shot! And now, we’re adding one more challenger each week!

Rules:

Fake $2 Win/Place wagers ($2 to Win and $2 to Place) and (1) mandatory $4 Win/Place wager will be made on the horse a player selects in each race. Only one horse may be selected per race. If a player’s horse wins, the player score is credited on both the Win and Place payouts. If the horse finishes second, the player score is credited only on the Place payout. And just so we’re clear, all wagers and payouts from races are NOT REAL and will be used for scoring purposes only.

In the event of a late scratch or change of track conditions, players may change picks provided given race has not started. If picks have already closed, the scratched horse will be replaced with the post-time favorite for that race.

Past results:

Week 1: Aaron Halterman (Dude #1) defeats Kelby Von Hemel $43.60 – $21.00

Week 2: Paul Mazur defeats Dude #1 $25.00 – $17.80

Week 3: Aaron West defeats Dude #1 and Paul Mazur $31.30 – $28.80 – $8.00

Week 4: West defeats Dude #1 and Oaklawn Wizard $53.30 – $27.00 – $25.60

Week 5: West defeats Dude #1 and Chance Moquett $42.40 – $37.40 – $22.20

Week 6: Dude #1 defeats West and Zack Gillham $68.00 – $49.80 – $35.40

This week’s challengers:

Brady Lukas

nFwZw45xBrady Lukas, grandson of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, was born in Arcadia, California. He grew up on the backside of Santa Anita
making wagers ever since he was tall enough to reach the betting window. He resided in California until he received a football scholarship to the Air Force Academy. He currently resides at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Ms, and is moving to Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, Japan in June.

Brady doesn’t believe in picking the second or third best horse, so he lives and dies by the win wager. The longest shot he ever hit was in the 2005 Kentucky Derby placing a straight win wager on 50-1 Giacomo. He currently owes 4 more years to the Air Force, but plans to get into the horse racing industry management side of the house. You can follow him on Twitter at @bwaynelukas.

 Nicolle Neulist

Nicolle Neulist lives in Chicago, Illinois. They were exposed to Triple Crown races on television as a child, but never made it out to the races until a company outing to Arlington Park back in 2007. Over the last year or so, after many late nights of reading about racehorse pedigrees, horse racingpurple has morphed from an occasional entertainment into a fiery passion. It’s just the perfect sport for someone who loves both trivia and numbers! Nowadays, Nicolle gets out to Hawthorne Race Course at least once a week, and the paddock there almost feels like a second home. They’re still relatively new to handicapping: even though the timid two-dollar show bets have given way to mostly exacta betting, cracking the nut of the multi-race wager is becoming more and more tempting by the day.

Away from the track, nicolle does computer security consulting, sings in a few choirs around Chicago, and plays a lot of pub quiz. They rant about horse racing (and a few other things, but mainly horse racing 140 characters at a time on Twitter at @rogueclown.  They also write in longer form about race picks, fantasy horse racing, and the on-track exploits of Curlin’s progeny at http://blinkersoffblog.wordpress.com.

Racing Dudes Handicapping Challenge: Halterman vs. West vs. Gillham

DudesChallenge

Welcome to another week of the Racing Dudes Handicapping Challenge! Each weekend we select 8 to 10 races from around the country and offer up a little handicapping challenge to anyone interested. We’ve received a massive amount of interest to take on the Dudes! So much so that we’ve had to resort to drawing randomly to see who gets to take on our defending back-to-back champ (Aaron West) and the Dudes. Everyone will get a shot! And now, we’re adding one more challenger each week!

Week 5: West defeats Dude #1 and Chance Moquett $42.40 – $37.40 – $22.20

This week’s contestants:

Three-Peat Champion: Aaron West

IMG_1921Aaron West started handicapping when he went to college and has been handicapping for 9 years now, particularly taking his game to a new level the last 5 years. Like so many of us, he learned how to read a form from my dad.

While he’s a fan of the Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers, Aaron’s money maker is the Kentucky Derby Trifecta wager, hitting them in 3 of the last 4 years (2010: $2,337.40, 2012: $3,065.60, 2013: $6,925.60). He attends Oaklawn Park regularly and has been to the Breeders’ Cup twice and Kentucky Derby once. You can follow him on Twitter at @amwest85.

 New Shooter: Zack Gillham

Zack Gillham was born and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas (home of Oaklawn Park) and has lived there most of his life. His love for horse racing didn’t begin until about a month into Oaklawn’s 2013 meet. He loves to learn and to solve problems. He also loves competition and making money. Horse racing was a good fit! He’s found that horse racing is a learning process that continues everyday and a problem that can never be solved, but when solid handicapping and some luck go your way, its 1526995_10100492353012961_2065106131_nsome of the most exciting 1-2 minutes you can have!

Like a lot of beginners, Zack started with Exactas, but from there went on to Trifectas and Superfectas. However, his recent task has been to conquer the Pick 4 wager. As he continues to grow as a handicapper, he’s expanding all the variables he likes to take into consideration, but he likes to take a combination of using how the race should unfold along with hot connections and track bias’s.

Other than horse racing, his other interests include golfing, poker, music, movies and generally anything outdoors. You can follow him on Twitter at @ZGillham.

Racing Dudes Thursday Betting Plan

webbanner-pixels1.jpg

Over the last few weeks we’ve had several comments, tweets, and emails asking if we could narrow down our picks to our top two or three selections, or who we really like compared to just who we are so-so about.  So today we’ve decided to try something new.  The “Racing Dudes Betting Plan” gives you all the horses we like on a given day, and suggestions on how to bet them.  So without further ado, here is the betting plan for this Thursdays action…

NOTE: The betting amounts posted are what I would personally use.  You may want to raise or lower the amounts suggested to better reflect the bankroll you will be working with.  Don’t bet the rent money!!

Aqueduct Race 3: #4 Appearance (1:18 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: The team of Taylor Rice and David Jacobson have been hot at Aqueduct, and this one ran a pretty solid second here last time out.  Could be a nice bankroll builder to start out the day.

RESULTS: Winner!!  Paid $4.70, $2.50.  Total Profit: $92.50, ROI: 61.7%

Oaklawn Park Race 1: #1 Jungle Princess and #1A Maybelle Slew (1:30 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Two Richard horses here…hard to not take a shot with these two.  Even money would still be playable, but keep a close eye on the price.  With these powerful connections the odds could go down quickly.

RESULTS: Second.  Paid $2.20.  NO BET DUE TO LOW ODDS!!  Total Profit: $92.50, ROI: 61.7%

Aqueduct Race 6: #2 Very Cherry Candy (2:45 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Was third last time in his first try over the Aqueduct surface after winning the race before at Gulfstream.  Enters in a similar level today, and might be better equipped to handle the track.

RESULTS: Winner!!  Paid $6.30, $3.30. Total Profit: $265, ROI: 88.3%

Golden Gate Race 1: #1 Quick Cenizas (2:45 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Russell Baze always wins the opener at Golden Gate!  All systems set on go here, but much like the Richard horses at Oaklawn, you have to worry somewhat about the odds.  Even money is playable, anything lower is dicey.

RESULTS: Second. Paid $3.00.  Total Profit: $265, ROI: 58.9%

Oaklawn Park Race 4: #2 Thingamajigger (2:52 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: It’s that time of year at Oaklawn where Asmussen makes his presence felt, and he has several live horses on the card.  This horse was a solid second last time out so we know he gets over the Oaklawn track ok.

RESULTS: Winner!!  Paid $4.40, $2.80.  Total Profit: $365, ROI: 48.7%

Santa Anita Race 1: #3 Atta Boy Pete (3:00 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: He returns to Santa Anita today after running a terrible sixth at Golden Gate last time out.  This track seems to be to his liking and he’s back to the level he runs best at.  Hopefully that poor last race gives us a decent price.

RESULTS: Third. Paid $0. Total Profit: $215, ROI: 23.9%

Oaklawn Park Race 6: #10 Justa Runner (3:46 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: In this race is the highly anticipated 4-year-old debut of Big Lute, but Hobby isn’t great with horses off a long layoff so I do believe he’s beatable today.  Justa Runner looks like the right horse to beat him with, and should be a decent price.

RESULTS: Third. Paid $0. Total Profit: $65, ROI: 7.2%

Fair Grounds Race 6: #7 Ben’s Juliette (3:55 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: She’s in the capable hands of Brad Cox and has been knocking on the door lately.  This should be the right group for her to break through today.

RESULTS: Off the board. Paid $0. Total Profit: (-85), ROI: -8.1%

Fair Grounds Race 7: #3 Pistolpackinsenora (4:25 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Just a solid Louisiana runner who has solid connections.

RESULTS: Winner!!  Paid $3.40, $2.80. Total Profit: (-10), ROI: -.8%

Santa Anita Race 4: #1 Winding Way (4:32 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Big time class dropper and Stevens stays on to ride.  That’s enough for me to take a shot.

RESULTS: Second. Paid $2.60. Total Profit (-30), ROI: -2.2%

Oaklawn Park Race 9: #7 Wizardly (5:10 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: He was ever so close last time out, and today should be the day.  However, another where the odds could drop too low…

RESULTS: Second. Paid $3.00. Total Profit: (-30), ROI: -2%

Fair Grounds Race 9: #1 Tight Britches (5:25 CT)

Suggested Bet: $20 Across the Board

Analysis: Winner of six straight races and morning line of 9/2??  This will be a jump up in class, but he’s worth an across the board wager today.  We’ll see if his Delta, Fair Meadows, and Will Rogers form can translate to Fair Grounds.

RESULTS: SCRATCHED. Total Profit: (-30), ROI: -2%

Delta Race 6: #6 Webster (7:30 CT)

Suggested Bet: $50 Win/$100 Place

Analysis: Field of ten here makes this one likely to be a decent price, and will also make for a bigger place payout if we’re lucky.  A lot of times a huge price comes in with favorites finishing second at Delta.  If that’s the case here, this wager will still be profitable.

RESULTS: Winner!! Paid $7.80, $4.40.  Total Profit: $235, ROI: 14.2%

Delta Race 9: #2 Little Face (8:51 CT)

Suggested Bet: Late pick 4 single:  TICKET: .50 cent pick 4:  2/5,6/1,2,3,5,6,7,8,9,10/3,4,6,9 = $36

Analysis: This one is very close to being the best bet of the day, and we could find some value in the other three races.  Since #2 Little Face is sure to be a short price in race 9 we can’t make money on him with straight wagers, so why not take a swing and pair him up with some price horses in the late pick four.

RESULTS: Single wins, but pick 4 does not cash.  Total Profit: $199, ROI: 11.8%

Racing Dudes Projected Order of Finish

#3 Midnight Hawk (KY) – His liking of the distance and great recent form make it tough for me to go against him in this spot.  I’m on record several times as saying I don’t think he can get the Derby distance, but lucky for him that question won’t be asked of him in this one.  He’s tremendously talented, has good early speed, and a nice turn of foot when turning for home.  That ability will most likely land him in the winners circle here as he continues down the Triple Crown trail.

#1 Candy Boy (KY) – He’s probably the colt I’m most excited about moving forward, but Midnight Hawk will be tough to beat at this distance today.  Midnight Hawk also could have a fitness edge as Candy Boy hasn’t run since the Cashcall Futurity last year.  I’m expecting a big effort that maybe comes up a little short, but he’ll have us all talking about his potential after this one.  Dangerous horse who could still be improving…

#7 Chitu (KY) – Sharp looking Baffert horse (what else is new) has only ran in sprints, but looks like a horse that has a chance to stretch out a little bit.  His early speed could find him on the lead, which is never a bad thing at Santa Anita.  Garcia has paired up with Baffert so many times to pull off upsets, and could do it again with thin one.

#5 Cool Samurai (KY) – This one could definitely be the wild card of the race.  He has had two very consistent efforts against good groups of maiden special weight runners, so this is the logical next step for him.  The class test will be strong, but perhaps not as strong as one would think a Grade 2 would be.  There aren’t any “monsters” in this one that we know of yet.

#2 Diamond Bachelor (KY) – He’s definitely classy enough, but he’ll have to show me he can run on the dirt before I support him much.  He’s had a few sharp turf efforts, but his only dirt effort was a dismal ninth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile.  Easier field in this one will be more to his liking, but will it matter?

#4 Home Run Kitten (KY) – Broke his maiden last time out running downhill on the turf, so the conditions for this one will be quite different.  He might sit a decent trip, but the dirt question mark is way to much to ignore.

#6 El Nino Terrible (KY) – Was a front running maiden special weight winner at this distance at Santa Anita last time, but will definitely not get that kind of trip in this one.  Can’t blame the connections for taking a shot against this short field, but will probably be out-classed.
