Likely Winners:

#9 Alternation (KY) – There is not much I need to say here; anyone who reads this blog knows that this is our horse.  The bottom line is this horse has been flawless in all three starts in 2012.  He’s never even been close to tasting defeat, and he’s won the toughest Handicap race so far this year when he dominated the Oaklawn Handicap.  Now the only question is whether he can take his incredible Oaklawn form with him when he runs at other tracks this year.  Five of his seven career wins have come at Oaklawn, so that will be a legit concern until he proves it.  Obviously we expect him to run well, and once again take another step up the older male rankings.

#7 Mission Impazible (KY) – This is one of the gamest race horses you’ll ever find.  He’s ran in all the big handicaps, amassing over $1.2 million in earnings over his career.  He’s only won three of seventeen lifetime starts, but has finished second SEVEN times.  He’s also finished second in three straight races now, all of which were Grade 1’s or 2’s.  There is little doubting that he’s the deserving morning line favorite, but can he break the streak and finally get into the winners circle?  Hard to select on top considering the string of seconds, but would be no surprise to see him win.  I’m expecting another tight finish for him. Racing Dudes Divisional Rankings

Three Year Old Males:

1. I’ll Have Another – Three straight wins gives him this spot with ease.

2. Bodemesiter – A win in the Preakness could give him the top spot.

3. Went the Day Well – The buzz horse as of right now, but can he repeat his Derby performance?

4. Dullahan – Skipping the Preakness for Belmont; could be a major threat in that one.

5. Creative Cause – Had a wide trip in the Derby, we will see if he can make amends in the Preakness. Continue reading

Oaklawn Report #14: The Recap

First Annual Racing Dudes Oaklawn Awards

Alternation

Horse of the meet: Bodemeister – Even though he only ran once at Oaklawn, the Dudes just can’t deny him this award.  His Arkansas Derby win was the most impressive we’ve seen since Curlin.  Alternation was a very close second for this award, but Bodemeister could end up being the best three-year old to come around in quite some time.

Older Male of the Meet: Alternation – No debating this one!  Alternation won all three stakes he ran in at Oaklawn, including the feature event for older horses at the meet: The Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap.  He’s stamped himself as a legit contender in the older Handicap division.

Older Female of the Meet: Absinthe Minded – Even though Plum Pretty won the Apple Blossom, this award goes to Absinthe Minded.  She ran four times at Oaklawn this year, winning twice and finishing second in the Apple Blossom.  Her four solid performances gave her the ever so slight edge over Plum Pretty’s one big run. A Day With “Our Boy” Alternation

This past Saturday capped off another incredible meet at Oaklawn as Alternation crushed the invaders in the Oaklawn Handicap and Bodemeister stamped himself as the Kentucky Derby favorite by winning the Arkansas Derby by 9 1/2 lengths.  Over 63,000 fans were in attendance to watch these two special horses perform at the highest level.  While Bodemeister grabbed all the headlines, The Racing Dudes’ hearts were totally invested in Alternation.

We had built a connection with Alternation throughout the season.  Thanks to Jeremy Stone of Little River Racing, we got to spend a lot of time at the Donnie K Von Hemel barn.  Jeremy was nice enough to invite us to the back stretch and show us around.  It became tradition for us to visit Alternation, Caleb’s Posse and several others every time we went to Hot Springs.

Caleb’s Posse was our favorite horse in the beginning, but we both took a liking to Alternation for a couple of reasons.  It sounds ridiculous but Alternation seemed to like us, and almost acted as if he recognized us!  I’m sure he did not, but we’d like to think so.  We also got to see him run three times at Oaklawn this year, where Caleb did not run because of the lack of quality sprint races the track offered.  Also, if you’ve ever been around Caleb’s Posse, you know that he doesn’t take real kindly to people petting him.  The first time I tried to pet him he bit into my North Face jacket, and I didn’t think he was ever going to let go!  For those reasons it was a little easier to “get to know” Alternation.
